Premier Jewish Singles is offering
a new and different destination from its usual itineraries.
It is partially a themed tour and one must use their
imaginations to experience the fun and adventure
available. When one thinks of Romania, it immediately
comes to mind….TRANSYLVANIA and the fictional
Count Dracula. Transylvania is home to some of the
best preserved medieval towns in Europe and most
relating to the legend of Dracula.
We will begin our journey in the very old city of
Bucharest, the Romanian capital, also known as the “Paris
of the East”. This city is rich in old Jewish
history and we will have an opportunity to visit
its Jewish sites in the Old Jewish Quarter, including
the Museum of Romanian Jewish History, the Chorale
Synagogue and the Holocaust Museum. It is also in
Bucharest that we will have a first taste of Count
Dracula while having dinner at the “Count Dracula
Club”.
We must first recall to everyone Count Dracula, the
fictitious character from the novel by Bram Stocker
(which is over 100 years old) and had nothing to
do with the real figure of Vlad the Impaler, aka
Vlad Tepes, King of Romania 1436-1462. He is the
author of a famous military victory against an invading
army twenty times bigger that amazed Europe and made
his people love him and never forget him. Vlad was
born to the then governor of Transylvania who himself
was a member of the Order of the Dragon and he was
called “dracul” which in Romania language
translates to Devil and “Dracula” is
a diminutive which means “the son of the Devil”.
Ever since, a global myth was born.
We visit Sighisoara, the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler
(“Dracula”) which is still considered
one of the most magnificent citadels in Europe
and the only one still inhabited. It also houses
the medieval torture museum.
We visit the famous Bran Castle which is also often
referred to as Dracula’s Castle. This fact
is disputed by historians as it is said the Prince
may have stayed there one night during an attack.
Despite this, it remains one of the most picturesque
castles in Transylvania, sitting on a hilltop with
beautiful views.
The tour would not be complete without a one night
stay at the Hotel Count Dracula. The hotel and its
inside court are impressive with their medieval architecture
and it even contains an amusing Dracula room on the
inside. It is in the town of Bistrita where Bram
Stoker based the setting for his novel of Dracula.
One of the main characters in the novel, the lawyer
Jonathan Harker, was a guest of a hotel named the
Golden Crown before traveling to meet Count Dracula.
We are now so caught up in the story of Count Dracula,
we continue our journey to Sinaia with a stop at
Snagov to visit the monastery located on an island
in the middle of Lake Snagov, where Vlad the Impaler
(Dracula) is said to have been buried. We have now
completed our fictional story and it is time to return
to reality and Bucharest before returning to the
USA.
