We fly into the port city of Buenos Aires which is
the gateway to Argentina, its capital and largest
city. It has a rich European history as well as
culture. Their European heritage, both Italian
and German, outnumbers the Spanish, thus reflected
in their lifestyle and architecture. One of the
world’s finest opera houses, the Teatro Colon,
flourishes here, adding to the life and culture
of this city. This city has no dominating monuments,
no natural monolith as its focal point. Buenos
Aires is composed of many small areas, events and
other interactions that contribute to make up this
fabulous city. Tall, modern buildings cast their
shadow on the 19th century Victorian houses; tango
bars still exist and small antique shops are to
be found everywhere. There are many small neighborhoods
with its own characteristics such as San Telmo district,
with its colorful multi-national
heritage and buildings. La Boca’s tin houses
are painted a rainbow of colors, fascinating to see.
The rhythm of Buenos Aires is exciting and must be
experienced.
The Jewish community in Greater B A numbers almost
one quarter million and is the largest in Latin America;
most of which are of Northern and Eastern European
Askenazi origin, mostly German and Russian Jews.
Until the 1960s, it was not uncommon to hear Yiddish
in the Balvanera garment district. Later came other
nationalities and Spanish was quickly learned and
they were assimilated.
From the major city of Argentina, we fly to Iguazu
Falls. It is taller than Niagra Falls and twice as
wide, covering over 2 miles and 275 cascades. It
was the result of a volcanic eruption which left
a large crack in the earth. It is a Unesco World
Natural Heritage Site. The falls are surrounded by
a virgin jungle ecosystem protected by national parks
on both the Brazil and Argentinian sides. The Brazilian
side is the more spectacular.
But all of Argentina is not made up of large cities,
there are many beautiful and natural areas; areas
of National Parks with glaciers and mountains for
skiing in the Winter and hiking, backpacking and
just enjoying nature and scenery in the Summer. We
fly to San Carlos de Bariloche to partake of this
beautiful area of multi-national origin; the German,
Swiss and English had settled here and they too left
their culture and heritage. We will wander through
Nahuel Huapi National Park, outside of the city of
Bariloche
to view its mountains and the
glacial formed Lake and the beautiful forested peninsulas
and waterways. We will also take a cable car to magnificent
lookout points.
